Members of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) are planning to attend the FCCLA State Conference on March 6 to 8, according to FCCLA sponsor Nancy Spencer. Several members will compete in Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events, which are events that task students with taking part in individual projects that involve community leadership, career planning and activism skills, according to Katie Ingersoll, senior and vice president of STAR events.
“A lot of students from our chapter are taking STAR events to State, way more than last year,” she said.
Justin Burnett, senior and treasurer of FCCLA, said he will be participating in the Environmental Ambassador category of STAR events. He has already begun planning for his event ahead of time, which is a necessity, according to Ingersoll.
“It’s really important to start right away with your project, so you have enough time,” she said.
According to Burnett, the Environmental Ambassador category focuses on raising awareness of better ways to treat the environment.
“My project mainly focuses on how to promote better use of drinking water,” Burnett said.
Any student that places in the top two spots of their category will be competing in the National Conference in San Antonio in July, according to Ingersoll.
“I am confident that many of our students will be going to Nationals,” she said.
