This year, the annual Holiday Spectacular concert will be on Dec. 6, 7 and 8 at 7 p.m., as well as on Dec. 8 and 9 at 2 p.m. According to director of choirs Kathrine Kouns, Accents will join the rest of the choir program to sing songs revolving around this year’s theme, “Once Upon a Holiday.”
Kouns said, “Everything is kind of based around the stories we tell year after year. It could be a real literal story, like the story of Santa Claus or the story of Hanukkah or the story of the birth of Jesus. But it could also be just the fun stories we pass on to our friends or family. (The theme) is just the whole idea that the holidays are a time we pass along from generation from generation.”
According to Kouns, the Accents will be singing “The White World of Winter,” a song about how people fall in love in winter. In addition, they will sing “Sparkle Jolly Twinkle Jingle” from the musical “Elf” and “There’s Still My Joy” recorded by the Indigo Girls, as well as group numbers “Go Light Your World,” “Silent Night” and a medley made just for the concert this year.
Sofia Rivera, Accents dance captain and junior, said, “My favorite song for Holiday Spectacular this year is probably ‘Sparkle Jolly Twinkle Jingle’ that all of the combined choirs sing together at the end of Act One just because it’s so fun. We’re all elves and it’s like we’re all working for Santa.”
In preparation for the concert, Rivera said she is reviewing the dances at home, going to SRT to rehearse and rehearsing more as an aid to another choir class.
“For Holiday Spectacular this year, I think a goal for me personally, for the other choirs and for the Accents is that we go into the week prepared, we know all the dances, we know the notes, and we add some style to it. (I hope) we’re all prepared and that if we needed to perform in five minutes, we could do it,” Rivera said.
Both Kouns and Rivera said they are excited for the rehearsals and concert to come. Specifically, Kouns said in addition to the preparation for Holiday Spectacular, the Accents will also need to prepare for their upcoming competition season.
Kouns said, “I am really hoping we can get the majority of the content for our competition show learned before we leave on winter break so when we come back in January we can just clean it like crazy and get it ready to go.”
