As the first semester comes to a close, National Honors Society (NHS) is offering tutoring services in room E137. According to Justin Macharia, NHS president and senior, NHS is currently focussed on collecting volunteer hours and most students can get their hours by peer-tutoring during SSRT.
“Big thing here is making sure all of our members get their hours,” Macharia said. “Another thing is that on top of managing hours, we are also focused on managing our members and executive board to make sure new volunteer opportunities are well-coordinated.”
Allison Malloy, NHS Sponsor and English teacher, said tutoring is still their main priority and they hope to expand their course offerings.
“Our main priority will always be tutoring. A lot of what we’re doing for outreach is making sure students who are consistently struggling are getting the help they need. At the end of the semester, we’ll have a small pizza party to celebrate the tutors who have spent the most time tutoring. Anyone who is already in NHS can tutor throughout the district and at the school by visiting the Canvas page and signing up,” Malloy said. “To sign up to get tutored, every SSRT classroom should have a NHS poster where they can sign up. They should usually sign up in advance, especially if it’s a less popular subject. Sometimes, we need Japanese tutors and we don’t have a bunch in the class at all times. But if it’s something like algebra, we always have plenty of tutors available for that. So students can tell their teacher if they need help and come get tutored in E137.”
