As an initiative to have higher quality food at lower prices, the CHS cafeteria is striving to buy more from local suppliers.
“The food we buy from local venders is usually cheaper because it doesn’t cost as much to ship it in,” Anne Marie Woerner, manager of the main cafeteria, said. “Also, the food we get is higher in quality and fresher since it comes to us faster.”
However, many students, such as sophomore Juan Curci, are not affected by this change because they do not taste a difference in quality and do not pay a lower price for lunch.
“It doesn’t really matter to me where the food comes from,” Curci said. “I guess it is nice to know that the food in the cafeteria comes from places that are close by, but there isn’t much of a difference in taste and (students) still pay the same prices.”
Although Woerner purchases her food from local vendors for practical reasons, she also believes it gives a small boost to local businesses.
“The biggest thing is that we get better food at a lower cost,” Woerner said. “But I also think it’s great to buy from local venders because it helps them out, and makes more business here in or near Carmel.” By Jerry Xu <[email protected]>
