“Seek peacefully, you will find.” – Egyptian proverb.
Unfortunately Egyptians have failed to take a page out of their own book.
As you all should know, Egypt has recently erupted into chaos as hundreds of thousands have been protesting against president Mubarak’s repressive 30 year reign. Until today, these protests have been primarily peaceful. Unfortunately, today, things took a turn for the worst as supporters of Mubarak have violently clashed with protesters. According to Egyptian government officials, there are 3 dead and 639 injured as of 5:40 p.m.
The resulting turmoil has led to mass looting and even more violence in the streets. Perhaps the areas that have been hit the worst are, unfortunately, the museums and ancient artifacts. Museums throughout Egypt have been ransacked and priceless artifacts have been stolen or harmed.
This issue has egyptologists all over the world worried and the problem doesn’t look like it is close to being resolved.
Anyway, National Geographic and several other major news sites have done a good job of covering this individual aspect of the Egyptian protests, and I wanted to share them with you. Check them out and let me know what you think. Click here for a National Geographic video about the archaeology news and here for a video from Science World. Finally click here for a Yahoo update.
Bon Voyage,
