The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) has yet to set a date for Ally Week. Originally planned for Nov. 12, the group did not end up doing anything during that week. Although unclear about the exact date, the GSA hopes for Ally Week to occur in the upcoming weeks. Presently, they are finalizing all of their plans for the week.
“We just want everything to run smoothly,” Taylor Farmer, vice president of GSA and junior, said.
Ally Week is a week for students to celebrate and support allies against anti-lesbian, -gay, -bisexual, -transgender and -questioning (LGBTQ) harassment in schools. Although the week, sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), was nationally celebrated during the week of Oct. 15 this year, the GLSEN is lenient about when any GSA or similar group actually celebrates it.
“It’s important for (the students to have Ally Week) because it gives them a chance to do a little bit of outreach and awareness,” sponsor Jeremy Horner said. “It’s important that (Ally Week) brings awareness to the issue for everyone.”
