Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) has not confirmed it will have a meeting on April 18. The group generally meets every other Thursday, however no meeting has been planned for this week as of yet, according to Taylor Farmer, vice president and junior.
On April 19, GSA will participate in the National Day of Silence hosted by the gay, lesbian and straight network (GLSEN). Through this day of action, the group, as well as many others around the country, hopes to bring awareness to the harassment and bullying that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) students experience every day at school.
The plan this year is to hand out GSA flyers and stickers to students and teachers so that they can understand what is going on.
“(We) don’t talk all day for the people who are silenced by society’s non-acceptance of their sexuality,” Farmer said. “They can’t be who they actually are because society doesn’t accept them. That’s why we aren’t going to talk (out of) respect for them, to show that we are supporting them.”
With the cancellation of Houndstock this year, the National Day of Silence is the GSA’s largest event during the second semester.
“It’s meant to symbolize the silence that LGBT teens feel or face every day,” said Horner previously. “They can’t be who they are or speak openly about it.”
