Global Giving will have its first meeting of the year on Sept. 9, according to sponsor Ryan Ringenberg. Club members will pass out Code of Conduct forms, talk about locker signs and discuss what the club hopes to do this year. Co-president and senior Jessica Chiang said she is expecting many new members to join this year.
Chiang said, “People should definitely join because they would be joining for a great cause, and we donate to both international and local charities.”
Last year, Global Giving donated to Operation Smiles, an organization that raises money to give surgeries to children with cleft palate. This year, Chiang said she hopes to donate to a different charity. Although she does not know which charity yet, she said she hopes the club members will have ideas for the first meeting.
“I wouldn’t mind keeping Operation Smiles as the charity we donate to, but I think it would be good if we could expand to a different charity,” Chiang said. “World Vision is the one that we usually donate to because it’s an international charity, but I’m not sure what area of the world we’re going to focus on this year. It’s definitely a back-up charity that if we can’t think of anything, we’ll definitely donate to again.”
This year, Chiang said she hopes to bring back Carmel’s Best Dance Crew, the club’s biggest annual event. Last year, Global Giving was unable to host the event due to the number of performing arts events that were scheduled for the spring. Also, she said hopes Ping-Pong club and Global Giving can merge to host an event.
