The CHS TEDx Club plans to host an independently organized TED conference on April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Studio Theater, according to Isabella Liu, club co-president and sophomore. Ticket prices are $20 and include lunch. Tickets are also being sold online. The event is open to everyone in the Carmel community.
The CHS conference, whose theme this year is “Things don’t have to be complicated,” will feature adult and student speakers, each illustrating the theme in a talk that is 18 minutes or less.
Liu said that TED, whose acronym stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, is a global organization that has an annual conference. At this event, experts talk about any idea that falls into one of the categories. Because the event is exclusive and expensive to attend, the organization allows communities to put on TED conferences on a smaller scale by registering for a license.
Liu said she along with co-president and sophomore, Tiffany Xie wanted to start the club to carry out TED’s motto that ideas are worth spreading.
“We hope that generating ideas will positively impact our school and community. I think (TED) has a great message, something that can connect the school and the community,” she said.
According to sponsor Allyson Wells Podell, the club is in the process of planning the conference with several committees that have different responsibilities.
According to Liu, the committees include design, speakers, breaks, marketing and technology.
Max Jolly, head of the speakers committee and sophomore, said his committee has secured speakers for the event and is in the process of meeting with them to refine the detailed portions of their speeches.
Wells Podell said, “One of the great things about the speaker lineup this year is the diversity of their talks. They are talking about so many different topics, but they are exploring the same thing within those topics.”
The breaks committee is in charge of food and planning activities for breaks built into the conference.
Liu said, “We kind of hope that break time is something for people to be able to relax from just sitting and listening to speakers but also something that can be more interactive.”
The marketing committee will be responsible for getting word out about the conference before the event. The technology group will be in charge of recording the conference to accommodate specific TED rules.
Katy Voor, member of design committee and sophomore, said her group is in the process of designing club T-shirts and invitations and working on stage design.
According to Liu, the conference will include the talks, as well as videos shown from the TED website, music and dance performances and interactive break activities.
Liu said the goal of the conference is to be able to share the concept of spreading ideas with the community.
“I hope people will walk away whether they feel enlightened or they have really enjoyed it, (feeling) that it has a positive impact on people who attend,” she said.
