On Sept. 7, Sony held a press conference where they announced the Playstation 4 Pro, and a newer, slimmer version of the standard Playstation 4.
The Playstation 4 Pro, which has been met with mixed reactions, is a new iteration of the PS4 that runs games natively at 4K, making console games look clearer and more detailed than ever before. Sony plans on releasing the new console on Nov. 10, starting at a retail price of $399.
Additionally, Sony announced a new, sleeker version of the standard Playstation 4 model for $299, $100 less than the original price model of $399. According to the Playstation Blog, the new model has reduced the volume 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent. Consumers will be able to go out and get this much sooner than the PS4 Pro, when it is released on Sept. 15.
Interestingly, Microsoft, who is the parent company of Playstation’s rival Xbox, announced two very similar consoles over two months ago during their Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) press conference. The Xbox Scorpio is Microsoft’s parallel to the PS4 Pro, although it is much more powerful. Currently there is no price is announced and it will not release until the holiday season next year. They also announced their own slim model of their standard Xbox One, titled the Xbox One S, which has been out since Aug. 2.
There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the competing consoles right now over which will be more successful. This is mainly due to the fact that the Xbox S is nearly as powerful as the Playstation 4 Pro, making both of Microsoft’s consoles more powerful counterparts to both of Sony’s. However, with Sony’s Playstation 4 leading in sales, this may not even make a difference on consoles sold. Consumers will just have to wait it out to see which is more successful in the long run.
