As Homecoming week gets closer every day, talk of the 5K race, spirit days and the Oct. 3 dance fills the hallways. The Class of 2011 in particular has been particularly well organized, according to Ann Mayhew, class sponsor and biology teacher.
However, Junior Class president Jeremy Weprich has announced on several occasions that the class is falling behind in spirit and in competition, particularly for the 5K Charity Walk/Run, which kicks off the Homecoming celebrations on Sept. 26.
“Only the teachers who tabulate the numbers know the exact difference of votes between the classes,” Weprich said, “but I know that it’s a very small margin, within five or ten people, between the seniors and freshmen and the freshmen and the juniors.”
Weprich’s response to Mayhew’s observation of spirit and organization within the class was mixed. “(The juniors) are very spirited, especially with spirit days, but with events that need to be organized, it’s a little more difficult.”
However, the representatives for the class are working to raise money for the Class of 2011’s charity, Joy’s House, by building the annual playhouse. The meeting for anyone interested will be held after school on Sept. 24 in Mayhew’s classroom, H211.
For the juniors in particular, the class has the opportunity to vote on this year’s junior Homecoming court. Online, at https://eduballot.votenet.com, juniors can vote for their choice out of the five girls who were nominated. The nominees are Cassidy Carlile, Kathleen Hayes, Jessica Endicott, Viviane Linos and Sam Volpe.
Weprich said the next all-class event juniors will participate in is the prom in May 2010, so he hopes the class might make some progress before the week is up and raise their standing in the walk on Sept. 26.
