New Diabetes Awareness Club to discuss diabetes, health

The Diabetes Awareness Club will have its first meeting on Jan. 11 after school in the main health center, according to according to Carol Gelatt, nurse in the main health center.  Students in the club will discuss new technology, healthy living, and share their experiences with diabetes if they would like to. The club will have meetings once a month.

“It’s kind of an informative support group,” said Molly Duncan, founder of the club and sophomore.

According to Duncan, “I got the idea (to form Diabetes Awareness Club) from reading through the HiLite and seeing how many diabetics there are; I felt there would be a great need for it (the club). In November my friend MacKenzi Haboush and I decided we wanted to make a club for it, but we decided to wait until the new semester.”

Students can go to Diabetes Awareness Club’s twitter account for more information or pick up an information paper in the health center.
“I would like to see the club involve those who have been newly diagnosed, who are interested in healthy living, who has family members with diabetes. Also, those who are interested in the medical field since its (diabetes) is on the rise,” said Gelatt.
