After the second Homework Helpers meeting on Oct. 24, the student-run club will be self-sufficient for the rest of the year. Students will sign up for the Carmel Parks and Recreation, and once they are accepted, they will be able to pick their volunteer times and log them after they complete the volunteering. According to sponsor Leslie McCarty and Brooke Hosfeld, co-president and junior, there will not be many more meetings throughout the year.
“Students will be self-sufficient for the rest of the year. They’ll go sign up and log their hours themselves, and I’ll verify them by the end of the year for recording purposes,” said McCarty.
As covered at the previous meeting, students will sign up on the Carmel Parks and Recreation website and choose their volunteer times. From there on it’s the students individually who take care of what they need to do online. McCarty, Hosfeld, and Abby Fields, co-president and junior, will be there for support and questions that people have throughout the year.
Hosfeld plans to expand the club over many elementary schools this year because she feels that Carmel Elementary is not the only school that has kids who potentially need help with their homework. She has worked with kids many times in the past and sees this club as another opportunity to help our community.
“I think that I want to be a teacher or something along those lines. I work for the school and my church, so I have a lot of experience with younger kids, and I babysit all the time, so it’s just another opportunity to branch out and make a difference in kids’ lives,” said Hosfeld.
