Students will vote for next year’s Senators and class officers from now until May 8 at 2:50 p.m., according to Senate sponsor Michelle Foutz. All current freshman, sophomore and junior Senators and class officers who want to retain their positions are currently running for re-election.
Students can vote online through the student government website, Foutz said. Unlike in the student body president election, they may only vote for candidates in their own class (for example, current sophomores can only vote for next year’s junior Senators and class officers). There will be no run-off elections, she said; the candidate who gains the majority of the votes will win.
Molly Frank, sophomore and current Senator, said she is actively campaigning this week for her re-election to the Senate. She said she has been reaching out to students on a personal basis by sending out texts, handing out T-shirts and puppy chow, putting up posters and campaigning on social media.
“(Social media)’s one of my biggest tactics,” Frank said.
According to Foutz, the use of social media has resulted in a greater voter turnout than ever before, as candidates can give their voters direct access to the ballot via a link on Twitter or Facebook.
