On March 4, winners of the Minumental Art contest put on by the CHS art department will be displayed at Carmel’s Museum of Miniature Houses on East Main Street. The pieces were judged this past Monday by the museum’s curators who picked the best out of the many on display outside the media center.
The artists of the work submitted had very specific instructions.
“The students’ art could be no more than an inch,” Jen Bubp, art department chairperson and art teacher, said. She explained that students only had one square inch with which to work. This produced some creative results.
Junior and art student Eileen Yan was one of the many students who entered her miniature artwork into the contest. According to Yan, it was a short and fun project, only taking up a class period. Her piece, titled “Electric Love,” was inspired by the song “Electric Love” by Borns.
“I just thought of a song that I could translate well into art and that was ‘Electric Love,’” Yan said. Her piece was made of a mix of medias which gave a heart and lightning the illusion of being three-dimensional. She put the heart and lightning against a background of colorful lightning bolts on black.
“I printed out the background, and the heart and the lightning bolt I made with this sculpting clay,” Yan said.
Being a seasoned participant having participated in past years, Yan said she still likes the project. “I thought it was fun,” she said. “It was a fun short thing to do.”
