According to Goalball Club sponsor Dave Romano, members have been meeting on Thursdays to practice their playing skills with the adult team at the Blind School.
Allyson Lafon, Goalball Club president and junior, said, “We’ve had some hard time getting together on our regular Mondays, but we have been meeting every Thursdays during our practice with the adult team. Members have been coming every week. That’s been working out really well.”
However, regular Monday meetings will still take place in order for members to work on their projects.
Romano said, “We’ve finished our locker signs. (Now) we are planning on making a new video with footages from last tournament and Thursday practices that are posted on the website, finding a new sponsor, working on doing a night tournament with the Intramural Sports Club, gearing up for volunteering at the nationals and looking at some portable playing surfaces.”
The reason for these projects is to not only promote the sport but also sustain the club.
“The way things are going now, it looks like this club won’t last beyond us, so we are trying to get our siblings involved in it; we are trying to spread the word a lot around schools here too. I have some friends who lives in another city who are attempting to create a goalball club at their school; it may start next year. It’s the first year we’ve done so much outside of school, but it’s just because we want to actually do activities regarding to goalball outside of school,” Lafon said.
In the long run, Romano said that he plans to promote the Paralympics this summer.
“We are going to do a video at some point that will tell you how to follow the summer Paralympics towards the end of the school year. I’m hoping to generate some buzz for the Paralympics for the summer,” Romano said.
