Impossible promotes triumph in adversity

Impossible by Nancy Werlin

Lucy Scarborough lives her life as a normal teenager who runs cross-country and has boys trying to date her. It seems like she has it all but her insane mother, Miranda, keeps coming back into her life, singing a song called “Scarborough Fair.” Lucy will not realize until it’s too late that the song is the most important thing she will ever be given.

Several weeks after her Junior Prom, Lucy finds she is pregnant by the guy who raped her that night. Her pregnancy at 18 years old and single was a coincidence as all her ancestors before her went through the same cycle because they are forever cursed by the “Elfin Knight.”

Under the bookshelf in Lucy’s room lies a letter from her mother instructing her to beware of the curse and to carefully listen the song, as there are tasks to be done in order to break the curse and avoid the insanity waiting after the birth of Lucy’s daughter. The story suddenly turns into more than just a teenage pregnancy, and into the fight fought for decades and never won by any women involved.

Nancy Werlin, the author of Impossible, brings the audience into the hearts and minds of Lucy and Zach Greenfield as they take the journey together through their love and complete the tasks to save everything they have. Despite the tragedies of finding love, this story shows how love can triumph over all and become the most important element of solving life’s biggest obstacles.

Although Impossible starts out at a slow pace and throws you into the middle of Lucy’s life, once you enter the book when Miranda comes back and makes the largest impact yet, the story turns into a novel that you cannot put down. It puts the misfortune of rape and the hardships of teenage pregnancy in a new light that gives those in these situations a different way to look at it and handle. The reality of anyone becoming cursed by an “Elfin Knight” is farsighted but it goes through the natural struggles and mishaps of a teenager to bring the audience closer.

The recommended ages for reading this book are young adult to adult because of the controversial topics explained throughout the book and the concepts that need to be understood. As the story unfolds, the audience will ensue deeper and develop connections with the characters. It will have you cheering for them to succeed and trying to figure out the tasks before the book reveals the answer.

Impossible isn’t a tearjerker but it will make you get involved emotionally through the lives of Lucy and Zach as they change together. Many can relate somehow to the story by suffering from the heartache describe or having to achieve something thought of as impossible. By Audrey Courter <[email protected]g>
