Color Guard continues preparation for upcoming performances

After performing at the Homecoming game Sept. 24, the Color Guard continues to look ahead to performances in the next few weeks.

According to Rosie Queen, director of the Color Guard here, the team’s first competition was on Sept. 11, and performances will continue until mid-November.

“We continue performing with the band during marching band season which ends on Nov. 13 with the Bands of America Grand National Competition in Lucas Oil Stadium,” Queen said via e-mail.

Queen said the team is made up of 42 girls from the high school, but there is also a JV team for middle school girls that is expected to start this month.

Senior Color Guard member Katrina Demlow said the team will travel to Centerville, OH as well as St. Louis during the season.

Demlow also said the team has been preparing every day after school as well as in the mornings for these performances.

Queen said she thinks members of the Color Guard are some of the most dedicated students in the school due to the intense practice schedule.

“On Gold days, the Color Guard meets at 6:50 a.m. outside by the stadium for practice until about 9 a.m. We are out there whether it is a beautiful 70 degree morning or a frigid November morning. It is still dark out when we start rehearsal,” she said.

Demlow said the team still has a few kinks to work out in its program before Nationals.

“We just need to get more comfortable and build our confidence with the show,” she said.

Overall, Demlow said she is excited for the competitions to occur later this season.

She said, “I just like the thrill of performing in front of a lot of people and I guess all the friendships (I) make, too.” By Emma Neukam <[email protected]>
