Academic Decathlon continues work on team training

Academic Decathlon is currently creating its honors team, but is still going to begin preparation for its competition in March. The team captains are creating study schedules and packets in order to better ready the team, according to club sponsor Wendy Gerardot.

“We pretty much have our teams ready, but we still need to narrow our honors team because there are too many people. Our varsity and scholastic teams on the other hand are set,” Gerardot said.

According to Steven Chen, co-president and senior, the three captains will be testing the honors team as well as making a brief outline of events on this year’s theme, the Great Depression, for students to study.

“We will begin testing their knowledge of events and working especially on the speech and interview aspects in order to make at least second for state,” Chen said. “In speech, students will have three minutes to prepare an impromptu speech, and in the interview, a panel will question students.”

Gerardot said that team meetings will most like pick up soon. She said meetings will begin to be more structured, focusing mostly on preparing students through worksheets and other exercises.

I think it will be a good year, and we’ll be keeping the tradition of getting first in regionals,” Chen said. By Andy Yang <[email protected]>
