Greyhound Connections sponsor Joe Stuelpe will soon receive a list, provided by the counseling department, of students new to this school second semester. The school secretaries keep records of new enrollments as well as additional information pertaining to the grade, interests, and hometown of the new students. Any student who enrolled here over break will be on the list, Stuelpe said.
Once Stuelpe has the new names, he will divide them equally among the Greyhound Connections members.
According to Greyhound Connections co-president Sarah Maurer, these members will make an effort to visit their students approximately twice every nine weeks to check up on them, see how they are doing in their schoolwork, offer them help with anything they may need and encourage them to participate in upcoming school activities.
Maurer said she enjoys visiting with the new students.
“They’re really nice, and they like seeing a friendly face,” she said. “I think it helps them get acquainted with the school because there’s so much going on,” Maurer said .
During their visits, Greyhound Connection members also put an emphasis on getting involved in activities in and around the school.
“We encourage them to listen to the announcements for a meeting of a club that they think might be interesting and then go. If they don’t like it, no harm done,” Stuelpe said.
Dance Marathon is one upcoming activity that Greyhound Connections is encouraging new students to participate in. Throughout the year, they also talk to students about games, sports, Homecoming, and Prom.
According to Stuelpe,“We want them to take any chance they get.”
