The Carmel Education Foundation (CEF) will hold its fourth annual Ghosts and Goblins 5K/2K at CHS. The race is expected to start at around 8:30 a.m. and be finished by around 9:30. According to Barbara Danquist, Co-Executive Director of the Carmel Education Foundation, the theme for this year’s walk/run will be Halloween, and hopes that everyone comes dressed up for Halloween.
The proceeds of the race will go towards teachers’ grants and be used to benefit Carmel teachers. The race will start at CHS and go through the streets of Carmel. According to Danquist, the race is popular with all different groups of people. “It’s a conglomeration of all different people participating to support the Carmel Education Foundation,” Danquist said. Last year, she said that about 900 people participated, and is hoping that 1000 to 1200 people will participate on the 27th.
In addition to the race, the walk/run will have a wellness fair that will be larger than in previous years which will be open to the public from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m.. Additionally, the Carmel Education Foundation is sponsoring a costume design where participants get to show off their costumes. According to Danquist, all seniors participating in the run/walk will have their name put into a bowl, and will win a $500 scholarship if his or her name is chosen.
Danquist says that the Carmel Education Foundation has been working hard to get ready for the race. “We have been working with the city of Carmel to make sure the path will be advertised and blocked off,” she said. In addition, she has been looking for sponsors of the race, and has received 20 sponsors, with Whole Foods being the biggest. Danquist says that the Carmel Education Foundation has been trying to get donations from the community and is getting ready to set up the wellness fair.
Medals will be given to the top male and female finishers in the 5K category. The top finishers in each age category will also receive an award. In addition to the race, awards will be given to the youth, adults and groups that wear the best costumes. According to Danquist, the race will be timed, but the purpose of the race is to have fun and help the teachers so that they can teach. “I think one of the wonderful things is that it is a way for family and friends to get together on Saturday, enjoy each other have fun on the 5K/2K, but raise money for teachers in the Carmel Clay Schools,” Danquist said.
