The Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council (CMYC) is scheduled to hold its next meeting on Jan. 28, according to president and junior George Gemelas. At this meeting, members of CMYC will listen to another guest speaker from one of the department heads of the city government, said Jack Langston, vice president of CMYC and junior.

Starting this year, the CMYC will attempt to regularly hold meetings every two weeks, alternating between Fridays and Mondays. According to Langston, CMYC members will also now be expected to participate in some form of community service once a month.

“We just need to participate; (we don’t necessarily) have to run a charity. We’ve done ‘events’ in the past, but (few of them involved) community service.” Langston said.

“We’re looking to be more community-oriented. Part of our council description is to be involved in the community, and we are still looking for ideas about volunteering and service.” Gemelas said.

Community service is part of a shift in focus that Gemelas said he is hoping to implement in CMYC: moving the council more towards its original mission. To accomplish this, each of the city’s department heads will be speaking to the CMYC to teach members about Carmel’s city government, according to Gemelas.

“As a council, we have a responsibility to know how the government works as a whole,” Langston said.
