According to Goalball Club president Allyson LaFon and sponsor Dave Romano, Goalball Club will hold its first call-out meetings on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1. The club members are trying to recruit as many members as they can, especially at the Freshmen Fair on Aug. 26.
In addition, LaFon said that this year, she would like to change the purpose of the club due to low game participation from the difficulty of the sport.
“I know this year, what I wanna do, is I want to expand it to not just learning how to play (Goalball), you can learn how to line judge, how to (be a referee), how to coach–because the hardest thing is getting people to (play the sport),” LaFon said.
At the same time, Romano will continue with the traditional purpose of Goalball Club: playing the sport, which is why there will be two meetings for Goalball Club.
“We were going to open (Thursday nights) as open gym nights. We always get a lot of athletes that are interested in Goalball but can’t (participate) because they are currently in sports. We thought Thursday nights (would be nice) for them to come and check out (Goalball).”
After the call-out meetings, the club members will anticipate for the Paralympics, which starts on Sept. 7, featuring the U.S. Men and Women’s Goalball Team; club members are excited for it, as they will get together to do a little Goalball Fantasy League.
