The Teen Library Council is hosting the reception for The Art of the Bookmark on Oct. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. on the first floor of the library. This exhibit will be up for a month and is welcome to anybody who would like to appreciate the various styles of bookmarks the Art Club and the Teen Library Council have created.

 The reception will be located in the program room in the library with food, refreshments, and various activities planned by the Library Council.

Michael Cherry, a young adult librarian, believes that this display will shed a new perspective on the idea of a bookmark and how people think about it.

“It’s an interesting idea because most people when they think of bookmarks, they generally put a slip of paper in a book or a receipt they got at a store,” Cherry said. This will allow [attendees] to look at bookmarks as a work of art… It will be interesting at how [the artists] will challenge the traditional notion of a bookmark.”

Members of the Art Club at Carmel High School and members of the Library Council will create and display various types of bookmarks such as hand-drawn, 3-D printed and graphic designed. Also displayed will be the work of winners of the bookmark decorating competition, according to senior Mia Holtzeman, an officer on the Teen Library Council.

“[Through bookmarks] it brings a whole new concept of different things artists can express themselves in because there always is the normal canvas and those kinds of things but [a bookmark] sort of presents a new outlet for art.”

This event apart from the all-famous Yule Ball the Teen Library Council hosts is one of the major endeavors the Council is pursuing and hopes to do something similar in the future.

“I think it’s gonna be a really fun community event and I think it’ll be very neat for the people to come down [to check out the art] because it’s gonna be a lot of art from people everyone knows.” By Raghav Sriram
