This review contains spoilers for the movie “Meet Me Next Christmas”
Year after year, I find myself rewatching the plethora of holiday rom-coms on Netflix. While the movie options are wide-ranging, the plots are confined to a lesser scope. “Meet Me Next Christmas” is no different. In a general sense, I knew where the movie was going within the first fifteen minutes, maybe less. Yet, I was entertained the entire movie. I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for any rom-com, but the quality of the meet-cutes (yes, plural) and the random shenanigans throughout elevated this Netflix film.
The story starts by introducing Layla, who is trying to get home to spend Christmas with her boyfriend. Her flight is delayed and she meets James in the airport lounge. Of course, they hit it off and agree to meet at the Pentatonix concert next Christmas if they’re both single.
Slight spoiler warning!
The story fast-forwards to the right before the next Christmas. Who would’ve guessed? Layla’s boyfriend is caught cheating on her. Immediately, Layla’s friend encourages her to reconnect with her “true love” James at the Pentatonix concert, but the tickets are sold out. After trying everything, Layla goes through a concierge service as her last hope. Layla and her concierge, Teddy, race across New York City and complete ridiculous side quests in hopes of receiving a ticket.
Although predictable and packed with fluff, this movie was somehow still hilarious and heart-warming. The random features of the real Pentatonix group were hysterical. Undoubtedly, “Meet Me Next Christmas” is sure to make you laugh (and maybe cry at the obviousness).
The theme of love’s magic made Layla relatable and I couldn’t help but root for her along the journey. Although, some character development and a sense of independence from Layla would have enriched the film.
“Meet Me Next Christmas” will likely not be praised for its cinematography or gut-wrenching twists. The success of the film, what made it enjoyable for me, was the holiday spirit displayed. The directors truly captured the essence of magical love during the holidays.
