Several students from CHS participated in the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for Central and Southern Indiana on March 9. The awards ceremony was held at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University at 2 p.m. According to art teacher Jen Bubp, CHS students earned a total of 24 Honorable Mention, 32 Silver Key, and 24 Gold Key awards in the competition. Two students earned Portfolio Awards, and two students were American Vision Nominees who will compete nationally.
“I was very proud of our school. The feeling was similar to watching the Oscars, watching a movie sweep over and a team being very proud,” Bubp said. According to Bubp, many of her students were winners in the competition. “This year, especially, we were very well represented,” she said.
Senior Alex Mikev was an American Vision Nominee who also won 4 Gold Key awards. “I was really honored to be a nominee. It’s given to one to five people in the whole competition in Central and Southern Indiana. My artwork also came in best in grade award of artwork that was submitted,” he said. According to Mikev, all gold key drawings will be submitted again to the national competition to be judged again.
“I thought my artwork was strong but I didn’t think it would win overall, with the sheer pool of talent,” Mikev said.
