The men’s cross-country team began their season Aug. 20 by winning the Carmel Classic Invitational against Top 10 ranked rivals North Harrison and Hamilton Southeastern. According to Coach Erhard “Doc” Bell, this was a satisfying victory and gave other teams a taste of this year’s cross-country squad.
Carmel has some very big meets coming up as they prepare to travel to three different venues over an hour away to run against top notch completion. They travel to Terre Haute, IN to run in the state preview and the following weekend they go to Mason, OH to attempt victory for the second consecutive year.
Via E-mail, Bell said, “Our plan is to rest our top varsity runners during the State Preview meet and be ready for a strong effort at the Mason Invitational in Ohio.”
After the Mason meet they travel to Louisville, KY the next weekend for the Trinity Invitational.
The workouts in the summer have most prepared the runners for these big meets along with daily runs. The runners understand the importance of winning state every year and use that as fuel during their workouts.
Varsity runner and junior Danny Williams said, “The top eight runners stay together during practice runs and yell at each other to keep it up.”
According to Bell, the “Band of Brothers” mentality is vital for success in winning State Championships.
