On Oct. 13, the men’s tennis team won its third state title in a row. The victory over North Central (who Carmel lost to earlier in its season) was a moment to savor, according to Head Coach Mike Bostic.
The individual state singles were on Oct. 20, and Sameer Kumar, number-1 singles and sophomore, represented CHS and made it to the final match. Although losing to a senior that has won the individual state title three times in a row, Kumar was still happy about the year and how the team did.
“It is hard to put in words how proud I am of this team,” Bostic said via email. “We dealt with a lot adversity this season but the guys never lost faith in each other.” The final varsity record is 21-1, with a loss to North Central whom the team defeated in the State Finals.
Sameer fought to win individual state not only for the title but also to accomplish something that his brother, Mihir Kumar, never achieved while CHS.
“You always want to do better than your siblings,” Sameer said. Although Sameer will have two more chances at the title, during the off-season he will strive to be better than he was the year before.
Carmel men’s tennis won its last game five times in a row for the past 10 years, and this year’s team made history by successfully winning three times in a row. The question of a fourth time often runs through Kumar’s mind.
“It’s going to be tough but hopefully we will,” Kumar said.
