On March 4, the Brain Game team, which is now under the name of Academic Competition Team (A.C.T.), participated in the annual Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC) Academic Challenge and lost in the second round, resulting in the team reaching the top 4 in the competition.
The tournament, hosted at Warren Central, was close, according to Brain Game coach John Shearin. The team lost to North Central during the second round of a sudden-death style tournament. According to Vikas Maturi, three-year A.C.T. member and junior, North Central has been the rival academic team for CHS since the beginning of the year, knocking them out of the Brain Gamecompetition and besting them in their only loss during the White River Academic League (WRAL) season. Shearin, however, said that he is still extremely proud of the team, even after the loss, and how confident and successful they have become from the beginning of their season to the end.
Watching some of the students develop throughout the school year, from lacking in confidence to growing and blossoming as both competitors and individuals is a treat for me,” he said.
This match marked the end of the year for the team, which both Maturi and Shearin said was a great one overall. They are both planning to return to the team next year. Possessing a win-loss record of 7-1 in WRAL matches and taking home the trophy in that league, Shearin believes that the group of students was very successful and accomplished throughout the entirety of the school year, and one of the best he has ever coached.
He said, “Seeing (the students’) pleasure and pride when they do especially well in a match is something that I really do take great pleasure in.”
