After teaching the Indiana Schools for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) how to use Kentucky Defense the past two meetings, Goalball Club will slow down in playing the sport because gym space is not available.
“The sports team always, always gets first dibs, and typically no gym space is available,” Allyson LaFon, club president and junior, said.
However, according to club sponsor Dave Romano, the club will be busy planning upcoming events.
Dining in the Dark, where participants basically do everything one would at a restaurant except blindfolded with their own blindfold that they would buy at the event has been a reoccurring event for several years now for club members exclusively.
Evening tournaments, on the other hand, are a brand new event for school sports players who can’t attend club meetings. Romano and LaFon said they envision this event as a one-or-two night tournament in teams of three with a quick learning session before diving into the game immediately.
Even though most of the meetings will consist of planning, LaFon said that members will still have fun by walking around the school blindfolded or play one-on-one in the main hallway.
“The school is way different when you are blindfolded because normally you can see everything, and then when you take away that sight, you realize, ‘Oh that hallway is longer than I thought it is’,” LaFon said.
“It’s all about that experience of what it feels like to be blind and how blind people travel. It’s about doing things how people think blind people can’t do, but they can do. It’s kinda cool for the club to get that experience,” Romano said.
Nonetheless, Lafon said, “Our goal this three-week period is to try to find gym space. We’re going to try to fight hard for that (gym space).”
