School Board met Sept.12, prepares to meet Sept. 26
The next School Board meeting, a business meeting, will be on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Educational Services Center, according to Layla Spanenberg, Carmel Clay School Board President.
The previous meeting was on Sept. 12; the meeting was a workshop topic meeting that focused on college and career readiness. Spanenberg said CHS Principal John Williams, College and Career Coordinator Melinda Stephens and Wesley Drew, CHS social studies teacher would be presenting about their plans to address this topic.
According to Spanenberg, the emphasis of presentation would be on not just preparing CHS students academically but also emotionally and mentally to ensure they have success beyond CHS.
“The counseling department has been working really hard in what they’re able to present to the students and making sure they include lots of opportunities for students to really improve on those college readiness skills and presenting great material to the students to help them with their either college pursuits or higher education pursuits,” Spanenberg said. “Some people won’t go off to college and might go to a vocational school or they’re just ready to start their career, and so we’re working with those students as well.”
Spanenberg said she finds workshop meetings to be very helpful.
“What is so wonderful about our workshop is that particular topics in the strategic plan are brought to the Board members, and those who are working on the committee pack all of the information and share it with the Board,” Spanenberg said. “It’s highly informative; I love the workshops.”
The School Board consists of five board members elected by local residents for four-year terms. Members include President Spanenberg, Vice President Pamela Knowles, Secretary Michael Kershner and members Tricia Hackett and Kathie Freed.
Upcoming meetings include Sept. 26, Oct. 10 and Oct. 24.
