On March 1, Mo Moriarity resigned his position as this school’s football head coach to take on the position of offensive line and tight ends coach at Indiana University. Before coming to Carmel in 2005, Moriarty served for three years at IU as tight end coach under former Indiana University football Head Coach Gerry DiNardo.
Moriarity has accomplished much in his tenure at this school. In his five-year stint with the Hounds, Moriarity has led the football team to a 58-14 record and four consecutive Class 5A State Championship appearances, along with a State championship victory against Pike in 2007.
“Playing in the State championship game 4 years in a row ties a record,” Moriarity said. “Only a few teams have been able to do that. Also winning the MIC conference outright this past year – Carmel has never done that. When you think about when I came here in 2005, Carmel hadn’t played for a State championship since 1989. To do it four years in a row kind of says a lot about where our program is right now.”
According to Athletics Director Jim Inskeep, a replacement has not yet been selected. “It is too early to speculate on what the time table will be regarding Moriarity’s resignation,” Inskeep said. “It will be a priority in the near future though.”
Moriarity said he plans to make an impact at Indiana University in whatever way he can. “You know, I’m just kind of being who I am. I think they hired me because of who I am and that’s who I have to be,” Moriarity said. “I had a smaller role (five years ago). This time going back I think I’m going to have more input on what we do, and I feel like I’ll be more involved than I was the first time.”
As for Carmel, though, Moriarity said he will miss the school and its students. “CHS may be the best high school there is in the country, and I really mean that,” Moriarity said. “It’s not just a great school because we have a great football team or we have great athletic teams. Kids here are great. It’s a great place to work, it’s a great community, great teachers. It’s tough to leave that, but I think what helped me is when I looked at going to IU, I knew how good it was here, and for me to leave it had to be something special. That’s kind of what I think it is.” By David Zheng <[email protected]>
