Hounds beat Cathedral 28-21 in season opener

Although it lost to Cathedral 7-3 last year, the varsity football team defeated the Irish 28-21 in this season’s opener. It was the team’s first regular season game under the direction of new Head Coach Kevin Wright.

Defensive lineman and senior Evan Chang said this win will set the tone for the rest of the season. “It just shows that we can be a team,” Chang said. “Even though we were down in the first half, we all kept our heads high and pretty much united.”

Cathedral scored the first touchdown of the game, but missed the field goal conversion. The score was tied at 21-21 in the fourth quarter, but Carmel gained the lead at 28-21 after a touchdown by runningback and senior Devin Brinson. Cathedral got to the Carmel 24 in the final minutes of the game, but safety and junior Jimmy Herman intercepted a pass at the Carmel 3 to seal the victory.

“We came back strong,” Chang said. “It feels good, and it’s the first step for going to State.” By David Zheng <[email protected]>
