Women’s volleyball team to face North Central Sept. 21

The football match-up between the Greyhounds and North Central is not the only time this week that the two schools will compete. The women’s volleyball team is scheduled to play the North Central Panthers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at home.

“I think they are a decent team,” captain and senior Sophie May said. “But we definitely have the capability of winning. We just need to work on staying focused and playing at our level.”

According to Head Coach Bill Bastin, who is in his fifth season of coaching at this school, the Hounds won the match-up against North Central last year, but need to continue working hard to pull out the win again this year. “We need to continue developing our defense both in the back court and net play and we need for our offense to terminate balls. This will facilitate us in defeating North Central and continuing to grow as a team,” Bastin said via-email.

Bastin and May both said the team has improved since the start of the season. “We are constantly striving for excellences and improving on a weekly basis,” Bastin said.  “We started the season struggling on defense, both back court and net play.  That aspect of our game has improved.”

With an 8-8 record, May said the team is quickly getting better. “We really just want to continue improving with every match, “ May said. “To do that we need to stay focused and have everyone do their own job to be cohesive on the court.”

According to Bastin, much of the team’s recent success can be attributed to some of the players stepping up in their positions. “Sophie May, Jessica Sherb and Gabby Arroyo have become the back bone of our passing and we have seen a lot of blocking by Lauren Pitz, Amanda Merk, Rachel Boyd and Emily Stebbins.”

The team’s next match, after North Central, is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 22 at home against Noblesville. At this game, the team is to hold their annual Senior Night, where they will celebrate the accomplishments of their three seniors, on and off the court.

“We started out shaky, but we have definitely come a long way since then,” May said. “We’re finally starting to live up to our potential. I see good things for us in the future.” By Alex Mackall <[email protected]>
