Key Club holds second callout, plans canned food drive

Students who could not join Key Club last semester can sign up at the club call-out on Jan. 20 in the freshman cafeteria. They can attend either meeting time: 7:15 a.m. or 3:15 p.m.

According to Morgan Perry, club president and senior, few people sign up only for the spring semester, compared to the hundreds who join at the start of the school year. However, she said, some people were busy last fall or missed the first call-out. Students who join this semester need only 10 group hours and 10 individual hours by the beginning of May, she said, while the rest need twice as many hours by then.

Freshman Yushi Homa joined Key Club last semester, but he said he is not worried about completing the 40 hours of total community service. He said his brother introduced him to the club and to the benefits of volunteering.

“It’s not hard (to get hours),” Homa said. “My favorite activity has been tutoring math to younger kids because I get to use my skills to help others.”

As 2011 has just begun, Perry said Key Club has not secured any volunteering opportunities for the next few weeks. However, according to her, club officers plan on holding a food drive for a local food pantry in the near future, where students could donate canned or nonperishable food items in return for hours.

“Start early,” Perry said. “Don’t wait until the end of the (school) year to put in your hours.” By Thalib Razi <[email protected]>
