Vocational building trades to begin flooring

The students of the vocational building trades class are planning to begin flooring this week. Although the majority of the flooring will be hardwood, some parts will have carpet. The entire process, depending on how much hardwood flooring the class will install, takes from one to three weeks.

John Coghlan, vocational building trades instructor, said he likes carpet in some areas of the house because it’s quieter compared to the clopping sounds footsteps make on hardwood. Because it comes in 12-foot rolls, carpet is also faster and easier to install. However, Coghlan said most people have an appreciation for the more expensive hardwood, and therefore the students will have to accommodate to that preference.

According to Cory Noe, vocational building trades student and senior, carpet is easier to deal with than hardwood because dropping anything onto hardwood will damage it. Noe also said that since the class now stands on its final steps, the finished product must be done correctly the first time, but all of the students have stepped up to the plate.

Coghlan said, “For most of the year, we’ve been working on these things that we’ve framed. It was kind of cool to frame, but it wasn’t the finished product. Then we did insulation. And it was cool, but it wasn’t the finished product. Now we’re doing stuff that’s the finished product. Flooring is really cool stuff.” By Rochelle Brual
