Auditions for the 2012 spring musical, “Les Misérables,” begin on Jan. 30, starting with vocal auditions, according to choir director Lamonte Kuskye. There will be a movement audition following on Jan. 31, and callbacks will be later that week on Feb. 2.

“For this show, it’s really about the singing and big voices,” Kuskye said. “Kids who are really accomplished in dancing, maybe not quite as strong in the voice, we still need them in the show, but for “Les Mis,” it’s gotta be about voice first. It’s good for those whose singing is their strong point.”

As true for every play and musical, auditions are open to the entire school although Kuskye said many choir members try out for the parts since they specialize in singing and dancing.

Michael Mykyta, sophomore and Blue and Gold Singers member, said he will audition for the musical this year despite not trying out for last year’s musical, “Hello, Dolly.”

He said, ” I saw ‘Hello, Dolly’ and thought it was awesome, so I thought I should try to be in the next musical.”

Mykyta thinks that choir has taught him how to improve his voice and technique, which he said will be helpful for the musical auditions. Being a part of Holiday Spectacular, the choir’s last show, has also helped give him on-stage and practice experience.

“Les Misérables ” will be performed at the end of April.
