Men’s soccer team looking to continue success into postseason

The men’s varsity soccer team prepares for their Sectional game against Lebanon. The team finished the regular season undefeated and MIC champions.

As they move forward into the post-season, the men’s varsity soccer team looks to continue its undefeated success in the regular season on Oct. 3 as they travel to Lebanon to play their first Sectional game with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.

“It has been a magical run with ending the season undefeated and ranked number one in the state,” Shane Schmidt, men’s varsity soccer head coach, said. “At the beginning of the season we set two main goals for ourselves. The first was to win the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC), and we accomplished that goal. Our second goal is to win State and we will begin to strive toward that goal against Lebanon.

Captain and senior Connor Thomas said he believes the team is on a mission and has come a long way to get to this point.

“It has really been surreal in watching the team develop throughout the course of the season,” Thomas said. “At the start of the year we struggled a lot but now we are performing really well. But also I think we are really experienced, confident and playing with something to prove since everyonedoubted us when we lost all of the Developmental Academy players.”

For Schmidt, the post-season is something that will live inside of him forever.

“I remember what it was like winning the State championship my senior year in high school,” Schmidt said. “I want everyone who plays for me to have the opportunity to enjoy those same memories. This is the state tournament and the winning team will go down in school, community and state history. The state championship is what every team works toward all season long. It’s just exciting!”
