Coquettes to have auditions Oct. 19, 20

The fall school dance team Charisma, which performed dance routines at soccer games, has ended as of Oct. 7. Coquettes, the winter dance team which performs at men’s and women’s basketball games, is scheduled to have auditions on Oct. 19 and 20.

The Coquettes team consists of about 20 girls, making it smaller than Charisma. Performance space is smaller and much more room is needed to perform the technical skills, such as leaps and turns, cutting down the group’s size.

According to coach Sarah Wolff, the dance surface that Coquettes perform on makes it possible to display many moves that would have been difficult, as well as dangerous, to pull off on the grass surface on which Charisma typically performs. Such moves include turns where legs must be at a 90˚ angle, taking up more space. These different factors lead to a different, more technical style of dance.

Wolff explained that, “Charisma is a lot of hip-hop, due to grass surface. Coquettes is a higher technical skill level.”

Just like Charisma, Coquettes dances are choreographed by the members of the dance team. However, because there are less members and more performances (twice as many as Charisma), every team member gets a chance to help create a routine. Each routine is performed twice.

The group meets for two hours, three days a week in order to prepare for the games. Coquettes are scheduled to dance at every basketball game until March 1, the end of the season. By Olivia Walker <[email protected]>
