The 17 girls on Coquettes have already completed six of their ten performances, and are rehearsing for the remaining four, the last of which will be Senior Night.

“Most of the girls are performers that are used to being on stage and being watched.  I think that when there is a low crowd support or turnout, it’s really hard to keep your adrenaline and momentum going for the 3 minutes of the dance, especially when the dance style is so aggressive.  But the crowd was really into it which really helped them to get motivated to keep going,” head coach Sarah Wolff said.

The members of Coquettes choreograph the dances, averaging about 2-4 minutes in length.  Jenn Mauer, a Coquettes member and senior, said, “You don’t have to choreograph if you don’t want to, but most people do.  I helped choreograph the try-out dance, the next dance we’re doing, and the Senior Dance.”

The Senior Dance takes place on Jan. 27, the last performance of the season. According to Wolff, “The seniors of the team are recognized at halftime.  They say their name, some of their accomplishments in high school, how many years they’ve been on the team, where they’re going to school, and what they’re planning on studying.  Everyone will perform that night, but 1/3 of it is just a spotlight on the seniors.”

“I know that very few high schools in the state, if not the nation, can say they have 17 girls doing the level of technique that we are doing on this team.  Most colleges can’t, and we’re able to do it…. I think this is going to be one of our strongest seasons.  Part of it is due to our senior leadership,” Wolff said.  By Olivia Walker <[email protected]>
