Men’s golf team to compete in tournament on May 1

On top of AP exams, finals and prom, the men’s golf team works to compete with the high standards set by last season’s team. The team plans to improve small aspects of its game in order to overcome its next obstacle, the Heartland Crossing Golf Tournament, which will take place on May 1.

Grant Meade, third-ranked player and senior, said this is a big tournament for the team, and they have had success in this tournament before.  “We usually play well in it every year for the past couple years,” he said. “I think we are going to go down there and win it.”

However, Head Coach Chad Carr said because prom is this weekend, he is not sure what teams will play in the tournament. Carr also said the team has had a lot of changes in the line up recently.

Carr said, “Players have to qualify to play in a golf match unless they have played really well in the previous golf match. With that said, our lineup could potentially change before every match, aside from the kids who tend to finish in the top.”

Both Carr and Meade said the team needs to focus most on “shorthand” or putting during practice. Carr said, “To improve our short game and putting, we basically will do hundreds of repetitions simulating different shots.”

According to Meade, the team plays its two biggest rivals, HSE and Noblesville, in its next tournament, the Crookedstick Invitational. This tournament will take place on May 4 at 3 p.m. at the Crookedstick Golf Course. The team looks to make up for the loss to HSE earlier this season.

Carr said, “I am not going to make predictions (about these upcoming tournaments), but I believe we will come out and play to the best of our ability.” By Alex Mackall <[email protected]>
