Women’s track team to compete at State on June 4 at Indiana University

The women’s track team placed second at Regionals on May 25. The team will travel to State at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University on June 4 at 3 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Mylin said he is pleased with the results at Regionals. With a second place finish, he said he thinks the girls can achieve a top 10 finish at State.

“I don’t think we have enough events covered to win State,” he said. “But hopefully we can have a top five finish.”

Junior Irene Gibson, who participates in the 400-meter dash and the 4 x 800-meter relay, said the team plans to run its races to its full potential.

“I think we’re ready for some real breakthroughs since it’s so close to the end of the season,” Gibson said. “But it’s not just our performances that matter. Even if we win each of our races, there are other schools that have good girls in each event, and even if they don’t place first, they could stack up the points for lower places in more events. There’s really no way to tell what will happen.”

Mylin said the team was promising in a plethora of events in Regionals. The team took first place in the 3,200-meter relay, the 1,600-meter relay and second in the pole vault and 400-meter relay.

The team continues to take it easy at practice to keep the athletes rested.

“We’ve mainly just practiced the same workouts,” Gibson said. “But the group is smaller now because not everyone made it through Regionals, so everyone is running harder. We all know more is on the line now.” By Ryan Duffy <[email protected]>
