Chess Club will compete Oct. 30 in a tournament at Orchard Middle School, according to Scott Kluttz, Chess Club president and senior. The tournament is one of the larger events of the season with seven to eight schools competing. The Chess Club will be sending five or six players, but walk-in players may compete in the tournament after registering at the door and paying the $10 entry fee. Participants do not have to be part of the Chess Club to play.
The Orchard Middle School tournament will be played using the Swiss System, a system based on scoring that does not eliminate players. Instead, players are round-by-round paired with opponents who have done as well as they have. This method allows more playing time for competitors.
“You can still play even if you lose,” said Kluttz.
The Chess Club earned first place at the Ben Davis tournament earlier this month, and the club anticipates equal success at Orchard Middle School.
