On Nov. 29 the men’s and women’s cross-country teams will head to Portland, OR to compete in the ninth annual Nike Cross Nationals. The race is scheduled to take place on Dec. 1 and the runners will return home the next day. According to Erhard “Doc” Bell, men’s cross-country head coach, the hounds are in a very unique situation.
“There’s only a total of 20 teams and a few individuals from eight Regional meets throughout the United States that qualify for this,” Bell said. “We are honored to join the girls who have qualified for the third consecutive year. It is generally really rare for a school to qualify both their boys and girls teams in the same year.”
For the men’s team, this is a new experience. It is the first time that it has qualified. According to senior Charlie Watson, qualifying caps off a very exciting season.
“It is just crazy to me how well we’ve ran this season,” Watson said. “We were the underdog team who won State and now we are going to Oregon for free to do what we love. It is truly an amazing feeling.”
For the women’s team, this opportunity marks the third qualification in three years. Junior Kelcy Welch has been lucky enough to be a part of all three trips to Nationals and said each trip brings new joys and new experiences.
“It is going to be so much fun having the boys there with us this time,” Welch said. “Our whole team is just so proud of the boys and how they fought through this season. For us though, we finished the season ranked number one in the nation and are looking to hopefully being able to do some work down in Portland.”
