Men’s golf team prepares for post-season tournaments

The men’s golf team has completed yet another successful regular season, finishing among the top four teams alongside Avon, Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) and Brebeuf.

However, the team will begin its post-season tournament with Sectionals on June 7 and hopes to bypass the loss that they suffered on the first day of the State finals in its 2009 season.

Tyler Zipes, fourth-ranked player and senior, said, “This year I think we have the experience and talent to go to State. We aren’t going to settle for making it there this time. We are going to try to win.”

The Sectional tournament will take place at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville. Head Coach Chad Carr said via e-mail, “Several good teams play in our Sectional, but HSE is the top-ranked team.”

The one-day event will take place at an 18-hole course with a par of 72. Zipes said that 12 teams compete in the Sectional tournament, but only the top three teams will advance to the Regional tournament. Each school can enter four players and throw out one score at the end of the tournament.

According to Carr, in order to finish higher than last season, the team needs to continue working on its short game. Carr said, “Every aspect of the game can always be improved, but if I had to pick one thing I’d say (we need to work on) our short game.”

Zipes said as well that working on short game would help the team improve. “Any team can always work on their short game. Good teams start with having a good short game,” he said.

If the team advances, its next match-up will take place at the Regional tournament scheduled for June 12.

Carr said, “I am hopeful we can make it to state and put our best effort out to finish in the top spot.” By Alex Mackall <[email protected]>
