Key Club members collect winter wear, attend Halloween party for seniors

Key Club members should attend either the 7:15 a.m. or the 3:15 p.m. session of their next meeting on Oct. 14 in the freshman cafeteria. There, they can bring in winter clothing for group hours as well as sign up to volunteer at a Halloween party for senior citizens.

According to club co-sponsor Katie Gray, Key Club is working with the Carmel United Methodist Church to supply clean (preferably new) winter coats, hats, scarves, snow pants, mittens and gloves to the working poor of Hamilton County.

Toward this cause, a few Key Club members will supervise collection boxes at the Carmel v. Ben Davis football game at home on Oct. 15, according to Gray. All club members should tell their friends attending the game to bring in any extra winter clothing they find in their closets, and club members should also try to bring in their own donations to the meeting on Oct. 14, she said.

In addition, at the club meeting, students can sign up to volunteer at the Prime Life Enrichment Center’s Halloween party on Oct. 30 at 3 p.m., according to Morgan Perry, club president and senior. There, she said, club members will set up the refreshments, tables and decorations as well as play Halloween-themed games and socialize with the clients of the senior community center.

“You should dress up if you’re going, too, I mean it’s Halloween, after all,” Perry said.

In the past, according to Gray, many Key Club members have waited to complete their hours until it becomes an emergency situation. She said she would encourage kids to take advantage of all of these fall volunteering opportunities, including the upcoming fall carnivals, so they don’t scramble for hours in the spring.

“Anyway, if you end up passing the minimum, Key Club doesn’t stop at those 40 hours,” Gray said. “It’s about making a positive difference in the community.” By Thalib Razi <[email protected]>
