Lifeguarding recertification class to be held in May

On Monday lifeguarding teacher Lisa Ruxer announced that her lifeguarding recertification class will be held sometime in May. The class is open for students who have enrolled in lifeguarding in the past school years. By participating in this class students will be able to recertify their first aid certificate and CPR license. Students are required to take the recertification class to continue lifeguarding because of recent changes by the Red Cross.

Ruxer addresses these changes. “The reason I am offering a recertification class is for those students that want to continue to lifeguard but need to learn the changes by the Red Cross. Although these changes are minor they need to be learned to lifeguard effectively.”

Some of the new changes are the amount of breaths given during CPR, when to breathe and when to compress during CPR, and the amount of breaths given during rescue breathing. Ruxer received these changes through an all-day hands on video released by the Red Cross. By offering the recertification class at CHS, Ruxer helps students save time and money. Many other facilities charge twice as much money.

Junior and former lifeguarding student Hannah Larson experiences the benefits. “I am very glad the recertification class is offered at CHS. That way I can take the class with my friends without going to a place I have never been before. It is more comforting to be recertified by a teacher you already had.”

Students who are interested in the recertification class must pick a registration sheet and consent form from the activities office. The forms will be due before the date of the recertification class to Ruxer.  By Sean Truax <[email protected]>
