Key Club collecting donations for Riley patients

Key Club members can support Riley Children’s Hospital by participating in Dance Marathon on Feb. 20 or by donating movies or video games for the patients’ entertainment. They can also help theRonald McDonald House by collecting and turning in pop tabs.

According to co-sponsor Katie Gray, students participating in Dance Marathon must put Key Club as the organization they are participating on behalf of if they want to receive six group hours for the event. If they have forgotten to write this on the sign-up sheets they turned in last month, they can speak to House sponsor Sarah Wolff to change them, she said.

Club members can also support Riley by turning in video games or game systems over the next few weeks to Key Club, according to Gray. They will receive half an hour for a game and an hour for a game system.

According to Evan Chang, club treasurer and junior, club members can also donate movies in VHS or DVD format, for half an hour per movie. However, he said, students cannot earn more than three hours by donating movies and video games.

In addition, Chang said, a few individuals from Key Club will take bags of recyclable aluminum pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House charity sometime soon.

According to the Ronald McDonald House Charities Web site, the organization recycles the pop tabs, which are easier to store and recycle than the actual soda cans, in return for a check from the local recycling center. This is one of the ways it raises funds for its Ronald McDonald Houses, which provide inexpensive lodging for patients and their families who have left their homes for treatment.

“We have bags just filled with pop tabs,” Chang said. “But we can always collect more.” By Thalib Razi <[email protected]>
